What Is Digital Signature?

Digital signatures are the digital equivalent of handwritten signatures but are far more secure and also a way to make sure that any document is authentic.

It is essential to keep the document as unaltered as the moment it was signed. This step concludes that our primary purpose in a signature is to ensure that the document is proof of the agreement and the final word. A signature is the final mark in this process, and the terms will and should not be changed after the signature.

However, there is another detail about signatures. We try to add a unique symbol to the agreement in order to prove our identity. Handwriting styles are a distinctive feature of ours. Our signature is supposed to be unique to our identity. Based on this assumption, the ink-pen signature has been the valid version of promises between the parties.

Accordingly, these two steps give us two crucial criteria regarding signatures:

  1. Who signed the document?
  2. Has the document been changed after the signature?

Digital signatures are the digital equivalent of handwritten signatures but are far more secure. Thus, a digital signature is a way to make sure that any electronic document is authentic.

It is a mathematical method used to verify a record or an electronic document's validity and credibility. In essence, a digital signature is like an electronic fingerprint for any given document. It is a way to ensure that the document contents have not been changed while the record was transmitted from one person to another.

In digital communication, a digital signature ensures the validity of an electronic document or message and uses encryption methods to provide evidence of original and unmodified documentation. This is done by associating the signer with the document – like a handwritten signature; each digital signature is unique to a single person.

Digital signatures are more secure than electronic signatures.

It is important to note that digital signatures are different from electronic signatures. An electronic signature is not always counted as a digital signature, and vice versa. On the other hand, a digital signature is built on cryptography and adds an extra layer of protection and credibility to the document. Moreover, an electronic signature can be merely the image of your signature pasted in a Word document. It can even be your mail signature.

To insert an electronic signature, a signer needs to add a symbol and indicate their intent to sign. To digitally sign, a signer must have a digital key that proves their identification. As a result, it is more challenging to close transactions using a digital signature, so it is necessary to ensure that the client has the correct form of a key (which is not as easy to produce as e-signatures). However, digital signatures provide more secure communication between parties than e-signatures because e-signatures cannot answer the questions about the authenticity of the document and the signer's identity.
